Flash Fiction - Blackout

This text makes part of a collection of very short stories whose objective is to keep my English fluency alive. (Cement, Public, Blackout)

The city was facing a blackout due to an overload of the electric system.

A woman was leaving the third meeting in a row when the blackout happened. Her feeling was just disappointing because there's still a lot of work ahead on that day. Electricity was fundamental.

She then took the time to check over her WhatsApp messages. For her no surprise there were twenty messages from her partner. She used to love her. But since she was promoted at work, her duties have considerably increased and in the same proportion, her girlfriend has become more and more lacking in affection. She never realized how needy her girlfriend was until last month.

She left the messages from her partner for the last reading position. She knew all of that was about. Attention charges.

After she analyzed and responded to work messages, she turned her attention over her girlfriend's messages. As she knew there was a lot of emotional blackmail. The last message was a punch in the stomach.

"I am here telling you I will kill myself if you do not even read my damn messages."

Her partner had done those threats before. It was only to make her feel bad for giving more attention to work then for the relationship.

She continued reading some reports while the notebook's battery does not end.

On the other side of the city, a young woman was suffering. She felt her whole world was falling apart. Her beloved girlfriend was being cold to her for a while.

They two used to be always together but since this new job appeared they ware not the same anymore.

Maybe she had met another woman. Maybe what they two have wasn't enough anymore. Maybe she found some other extraordinary people to go out with.

None of her efforts seems to affect her "always busy" girlfriend. She tried everything.

The worst part is the "no" conversation between them. She doesn't know the new needs of her partner. She was feeling so confused and out of the place lately.

But today she would do the last call. Today she will once for all know what was really happen.

During her pause from the work in the morning, she sent some text messages to her girlfriend.

For her no surprise, she didn't see the messages. Then she continued sending text messages exposing her feeling, her needs, and her fears. And she still paying no attention.

She was not able to work on that day. She gave some silly excuse and left work.

She walked through a public square when she found a bench to sit and continue to send messages.

She did her last call: "I am here telling you I will kill myself if you do not even read my damn messages."

When she typed another message she noticed that the message didn't arrive. Her only thought was: she blocked me?!

That was too much to handle she stood up and started to walk unconsciously of what was happening around her.

She didn't see when a car hitter her while she was crossing the street. She flew and brutally landed over a hard cement.

The man was driving not knowing that a blackout just happened. He thought that the light was green but a young woman appeared in front of his car. He tried to stop his car but was too late. His car ran over the young woman.

***

Late in that night, two policemen knocked on the door of a woman.

They told her what happened with the young woman and that she was dead due to a car accident.

The woman then asked an excuse for a minute. When she came back she brought the telephone number of young woman's parents.

- Take this. Is the phone number os her parents. We were just friends and not too close. Thank you. Goodnight.
